After 38 years in the corporate world, I decided to change careers because of my love for my language and the desire to instill that same passion and knowledge of the culture and language in others. Previously, I tutored struggling Spanish students and students that had a deeper desire to learn more about the culture from a native hispanic. I started my studies in Miami, Florida then took a break from school for several years. NATIONAL FOREIGN LANGUAGE WEEK AT PHS!
Last week, we celebrated National Foreign Language Week with our students. We learned fun facts about French, German, and Spanish-speaking countries. Our students enjoyed themselves as they learned new things and discovered some unexpected facts about the countries that speak the languages they study here at PHS! Some of the facts were expected, while others were completely unexpected. Students shared some fun facts about the cultures from the languages that they are learning and were also encouraged to wear the colors from the flags of a country whose language was celebrated the specified day: Monday was English Day; Tuesday was French Day; Wednesday was German Day; Thursday was Spanish Day and; Friday was Panther Pride Day. We also had trivia questions from different languages every day of the week in their first period classes. This was an amazing experience for students and teachers as we all collaborated to make this week a success. Furthermore, it raised awareness of the value of world languages and their cultures and how we can understand ourselves better by learning about other cultures. Enjoy the fun facts in the pictures below! |

PHS World Language DEPartment Welcomes USC's Thinking Globally Ambassadors!
For the second consecutive year, Pelion High School (PHS) World Language Department has collaborated with USC's Thinking Globally Program to bring Ambassadors to our students! Bright and early this morning, our World Language Students and International Club Members heard from USC Ambassadors Chris Adrian of Germany, Man Man (Heather) Hsu of Hong Kong, and Gabriela Bonilla of Ecuador. Our Ambassadors brought us messages and insights from three continents! The students eagerly received their presentations and learned about their cultures and perspectives. Our students talked about soccer and their opinions on the upcoming FIFA World Cup Tournament with Chris, learned new phrases in Cantonese with Heather, and received a message of love, peace and beauty from Gabriela.
We thank our USC's Thinking Globally Program Coordinator Justin Mellish for collaborating with us to make this experience possible for our students at PHS; furthermore, we look forward to future visits that will enlighten our Pelion Panthers and continue to open their eyes to the world of possibilities that World Languages have to offer them ahead!

Pelion High School Celebrates National Foreign Language week 2019!
On the week of March 4th, we celebrated National Foreign Language Week! We kicked off the week with a visit from USC's Thinking Globally Program Ambassadors: Dianne Deauna (Philippines), Otega Ejegbavwo (Nigeria), Harveen Kaur (India), and Manal Ruzaiqi (Oman). The students got to hear from the ambassadors in both assembly and classroom settings. They also learned about the cultures and countries that the ambassadors represented. They learned about what life is like in those far away places and felt more connected to the world outside Pelion, SC.
During this week, we also celebrated each language represented in our school by themed days where the students had the opportunity to participate in trivia contests, eat cafeteria meals that were themed to the countries and cultures of the target language and, they also got a chance to compete for an international breakfast! Additionally, our library joined us in celebrating by showcasing selections that represented different countries!
The celebrations during the week were as follows: Monday was German Day, Tuesday was Mardi Gras and French Day, Wednesday was Spanish Day, Thursday was English Day and Friday was Panther Pride Day!
